How to test a golf cart motor?

i have a 1984 36v EZ go golf cart. before i go off and buy 6 new batteries (at $65 a PIECE!!!) i need to know that the motor works. how do i test the motor WITHOUT batteries. i need step by step directions on how to do this. and also how to test the solenoid.

      Try getting the batteries tested first. If you don`t have 36 volts then it`s hard to test the motor
